Last Friday I met a terrible fire accident. I went to bed at 11 pm. Suddenly, I woke up hearing a hue and cry at a little distance. I got up from bed and rushed to the spot. I found that a cottage was burning and the fire was rising up to the sky. The fire had already engulfed one-third of the cottage and was spreading rapidly to damage the whole. But, like me, the neighbours were rushing to the cottage and trying to extinguish the fire. Seeing the fire, most of them came with jugs, buckets, pots, pitchers and so on. It was fortunate that there was a pond nearby. The women were fetching water with the pots and the men were throwing it at the fire. Within fifteen minutes a united effort brought the fire under control and people succeeded in extinguishing it. The dwellers of the cottage were a couple with their only son. The man of the cottage used to earn his livelihood by working in the field. The fire incident made them seriously upset. This accident left nothing for them. But the neighbours assured them of financial assistance. I was greatly shocked to see the burnt cottage. But the fellow feelings made it easy for me to forget the incident. So, a united effort is needed to combat any type of accident.

আমার মতাে অন্যান্য প্রতিবেশীরাও বাড়িটির কাছে ছুটে এসেছিল এবং আগুন নেভানাের চেষ্টা করেছিল। আগুন দেখে তাদের অনেকেই জগ, বালতি, মগ, কলসি এবং অনান্য জিনিস নিয়ে এল। ভাগ্য ভালাে যে, কাছেই একটি পুকুর ছিল। মহিলারা পুকুর থেকে পাত্রে পানি আনছিল এবং পুরুষেরা তা আগুনে নিক্ষেপ করছিল। পনেরাে মিনিটের মধ্যেই একটি সমন্বিত প্রচেষ্টা আগুনকে নিয়ন্ত্রণে আনতে সমর্থ হলাে এবং লােকজন আগুন নেভাতে সমর্থ হলাে। বাড়ির বাসিন্দা ছিল – স্বামী স্ত্রী ও তাদের একমাত্র ছেলে। বাড়ির কর্তা মাঠে কাজ করে জীবিকা নির্বাহ করত। আগুনের দুর্ঘটনা তাদের ভীষণ মর্মাহত করল। দুর্ঘটনায় তাদের আর কিছু রইল না। বকিন্তু প্রতিবেশীরা তাদের আর্থিক সহায়তা করার জন্য আশ্বাস দিল। পুড়ে যাওয়া বাড়িটি দেখে আমি খুবই মর্মাহত হলাম। কিন্তু সমবেদনা আমাকে ঘটনাটি ভুলে যেতে সাহায্য করল। তাই যেকোনাে ধরনের দুর্ঘটনা মােকাবেলা করার জন্য সমন্বিত প্রচেষ্টা প্রয়ােজন।
