A long time ago, the town of Hamelin in Germany was faced with a great problem. It became full of rats. The rats were so big and fierce that they fought the dogs, killed the cats and bit the babies in the cradles. They ate up different types of foods and cut the papers and valuable documents into pieces. People had to face a great crisis. One day the city mayor and the administrative officers called a meeting to solve the problem. They offered a prize for the person who would save them from the disturbing rats. At that time a pied piper agreed to accept the proposal. Playing a melodious tune on his pipe, the piper began to walk and all the rats followed him. At last, the piper reached a hill near a sea and the rats one after another jumped into the sea. Thus the city was saved from the rats. Then the piper demanded his prize but the mayor did not want to pay him fully. Saying nothing the piper went away. Now he played another tune on his pipe. The tune made all the nice babies of the city follow

the piper. At first the people of Hamelin did not pay much head to the issue. But once the piper disappeared with the babies, they started crying. But all went in vain. Those babies never came back.

অনুবাদ: অনেক অনেক দিন আগে, জার্মানির হ্যামেলিন শহরের লােকজন মারাত্মক সমস্যার সম্মুখীন হয়েছিল। শহরটি ইঁদুরে পূর্ণ হয়ে গিয়েছিল। ইদুরগুলো এত বিশাল ছিল যে তারা কুকুরের সাথে লড়াই করত, বিড়ালকে হত্যা করত এবং দোলনার শিশুদের কামড় দিত। তারা বিভিন্ন জিনিস খেয়ে ফেলত এবং কাগজ ও মূল্যবান নাথপত্র টুকরাে টুকরাে করে ফেলত। লােকজনদের অনেক সমস্যার সম্মুখীন হতে হত। সমস্যা সমাধান করার জন্য একদিন শহরের মেয়র এবং প্রশাসনিক কর্মকর্তারা একটি সভা আহ্বান করলেন। যে ব্যক্তি তাদের এই বিরক্তিকর ইঁদুরগুলাে থেকে রক্ষা করতে পারবে তারা তাকে পুরস্কার প্রদানের ঘােষণা দিলেন। সেই সময় একজন বংশীবাদক তাদের এই প্রস্তাব গ্রহণ করতে রাজি হলাে। বাঁশিতে সুমধুর এক সুর বাজিয়ে বংশীবাদক হাঁটতে থাকল এবং সব ইদুর তাকে অনুসরণ করল। অবশেষে বংশীবাদক সাগরের পাশে এক পাহাড়ে পৌঁছাল এবং ইদুরগুলো একের পর এক নদীতে ঝাপিয়ে পড়ল। এভাবে শহরটি ইদুরের হাত থেকে রক্ষা পেল। তারপর বংশীবাদক পুরস্কার দাবি করল, কিন্তু মেয়র তাকে পুরো পুরস্কার প্রদান করতে চাইলেন না। কিছু না বলেই বংশীবাদক চলে গেল। এখন সে বাঁশিতে অন্য একটি সুর বাজাল। সে সুরে শহরের সব সুন্দর শিশুরা বংশীবাদককে অনুসরণ করল ।

প্রথমে হ্যামেলিনের বাসিন্দারা ঘটনাটিতে বিশেষ গুত্ব আরােপ করল না। কিন্তু যখন বংশীবাদক শিশুদের নিয়ে হারিয়ে গেল, তারা কাদতে শুরু করল। কিন্তু তাদের এই কান্না নিষ্ফল হল। সেই শিশুরা আর ফিরে এল না।
